I haven't lost my job, but it's time to make a move.  Leave it to me to try and make a move during a freaking recession.    More details to come...
But if anyone knows of an opening for someone with experience in customer service management, operations, equipment rentals, some web design, photography, and some IT please let me know.

Ok I am one of those people that likes the icanhascheezburger.com stuff. Yeah it's unbelievably stupid stuff with misspelled and/or made up words. But, sometimes we all need to get away from the main stream and just enjoy something with no other intention other than being funny. No politics, no opinions, no religion, just plain fun.

Finally no more rain!!!!...

After several days of steady rain we finally have a break!  I am feeling a nice ride this evening out to Creeds!

I can almost hear it.... "Ahhh, Dad there's an awful lot of Richmond Pro guys here. This is going to be a fast race!"
After my dismal 14th place finish at the Tour De Beach I decided to hang out and take some pictures of the Pro 1/2/3 race. At least I would have something to show for the day! They have been uploaded a bunch of pictures to the photo gallery in the Sports section. Here's the link to the gallery: Tour De Beach 1,2,3 Race

Amber's Blog...

Amber recently started her own blog and she's been updating it regularly too! Her most recent post is a congratulations to me for placing third this weekend at that Casey Criterium. She deserves a lot of gratitude from me for putting up with my horrible memory for dates, crappy moods, and most of all this chaotic sports season. Between Devon's baseball and my biking our time together has been very limited. She has also been spending a lot of her time carting Devon around to his practices so that I would have time to train.

Take some time to check out her blog... http://www.stormyworld.net/amber

This awesome picture was taken by Cyclochris's wife at the Fat Frog's Langley Speedway Novice Track race on April 18th. What a fun race that was!!!!

This was a fun filled weekend of racing. Saturday was the Tour De Beach Crit Race at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Sunday was the JRVS/Casey Criterium at the Todd Stadium in Newport News, Virginia.
Saturday was a perfect day for a race, it was sunny and the temperature was perfect. The downside was that I felt like crap! Maybe it was that bottle of Stone IPA the night before, more than likely it was the pollen and allergies though. My head was stuffed up, my sinuses were hurting like something fierce, and my legs were "achy". The warm up had me feeling a little better but as I went in to the race I knew I didn't have it. I figured I would do my best to help out the team on this one even if I wasnt going to do well. We had a great showing of Frogs and the perfect opportunity to work on some team tactics. At one point I was off the front with David from Tripower. I believe that I stayed out front a bit longer than I should have which is evident in the race results showing my 14th place finish. At least it was still good for some points for the team. Congratulations to Richie who put out a smoking sprint to finish second place.
Sunday was a completely different day. Rain showers, cooler temperatures, and a course that I don't like. I almost skipped going to this one due to the fact that I just have too much riding on my real job to risk it with injuries from this hobby of mine. Despite my concerns I was feeling good. When I arrived I recieved reports of several crashes. The day was not going well! Two strong and experienced women riders, BJ and Anne Hardy, crashed and were transported to the hospital.  BJ has a broken collar bone, a slight concussion, and a stitched up knee. Anne supposedly knocked her head pretty hard but I dont have any other information on her. There were also other crashes during the day, one of which I witnessed up close and personal. It was only a few minutes before my race was to start and the Cat 4 race had about three laps to go when several crashed and rolled over each other right in front of us! One of those riders had to be transported off in an ambulance. Talk about one heck of a way to break my confidence level! I was doubting my decision to race even more.
During warm up I was feeling strong and I was already there so I finally decided to line up and do this race. Even if it ended up being unsafe I could fall off the back and count it as a mass start for my Cat 4 upgrade. Gilbert did made his chief ref announcements and recommended we keep the "rubber on the road" and believe me I had every intention of doing just that. Going in to the first 90 degree right was interesting and the pace was fast for the first couple of laps. The pace of course slowed down in the middle part of the race with Richie Langley doing one heck of a pull on the front for a few laps. Several Frogs pulled attacks and worked the pace up. I kept expecting the Casey crew to try to repeatedly attack and break down the pack, but they never came through. Once again it was the Frogs and a couple of other guys that were really showing the strength. Going in to the last few laps I was still feeling pretty good so moved up towards the front of the pack. On the last lap I hammered it in to the inside of the final corner passed a few riders to work the sprint and take myself to a third place finish.

I hope that BJ, Anne, and anyone else that was injured this weekend will recover fast and get back out there racing in no time!
This coming week is a "No Devon" which means plenty of time to train. No races next weekend means I will have the time to get in some much needed long rides and some Pungo Ferry Bridge work to prepare for the Wintergreen Ascent. It's only 12 days away!!

K-blog has posted some great pictures in his Picasa Web Albums from the Fat Frog's Langley Speedway Crit and the April 15th Tuesday Night Training Crits. This picture of his is one of the best shots I have seen in a while....
Last night I rode in one of the Virginia Beach Training Criteriums.  I "blew up" with three laps to go, completely loosing my legs.  It was windy and there was a fast group, but all that aside I am not quite sure what really happened.  I have a couple of days off the bike now and then an easy ride on Friday.  Maybe my legs will be back for this weekend.  And I'll remember not to call out "on the inside" or "coming through" this weekend when racing at the Tour De Beach or Casey Criterium.

The Results Are In!....

A Busy Weekend!...

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks
I am sitting here typing this and looking back at a weekend that went by in a complete blur! This was to be a weekend of racing and officiating for races put on by my team, Fat Frogs Racing. Both the Langley Speedway Criterium and the Conquer The Canal Time Trial were scheduled to happen this weekend.  My wife, Amber, I am sure is in a fog today. She committed herself to two days of getting up earlier than she does for her normal work week and working registration for the two races this weekend. I love my wife!  She not only puts up with my crap, but she also is willing to go out and put up with everyone else's to support the events too!

Friday night was all the preparation, cleaning bikes, making minor adjustments, and getting all of the items and gear required to be prepared for the unpredictable weather in Hampton Roads.

Saturday brought the first race of the weekend. The Virginia Beach Farm Bureau Conquer the Canal Time Trial on the Old Route 17 trail in Chesapeake. The Route 17 trail is a nicely paved, straight, and flat, former section of Route 17 that was opened a couple of years ago as a multi-use park. The time trial course was set up as an out and back of approximately 13 total miles. The temperature was nice and there was what felt like a solid head wind to make the ride out "fun". I wasn't feeling all that great, my stomach was doing more than the normal nervous rumbles, and overall I just was not excited about the ride. Seeing as I don't do well with the whole self motivation thing I have been experimenting with different methods to trick myself in to working harder. For this ride the plan was to go strictly on heart rate. I taped over my computer display like I do in criteriums and only had the display on my heart rate monitor to go on. The theory was that my heart rate would give me a better judge of my effort than a speedometer. A power tap that showed watts would have been nice, but at this stage in the sport I can not warrant spending the money for one of those. Anyways, the theory bombed horribly. I rode what I thought was hard on the way out by reading my heart rate and I tried to pace myself so my legs were not screaming until the last 4 miles. I figured that I would hit the turn around and hammer back with a nice tail wind. Well, I made my turn around and something was wrong. I misjudged the wind direction and had to fight a crosswind most of the way back, oops. The results showed that I didn't ride hard enough, my average speed was far less than what it should have been. I do not recall my actual time but it was a little over 33 minutes. The time put me in 16th place, only 2 seconds from placing in a points place! Matt Keane posted a super fast time to when the Cat 5 category. Lesson learned, watch your time and speed on a time trial!!!

Day 2 of the race weekend...The Towne Bank Langley Speedway Criterium and Track Race. This day started with me being a part of a great team of officials for the first few races, then at 11 removing the officials "hat" to start warming up for my first of two races for the day. This would be my first ever track race. This was bound to be interesting... a bunch of people on bikes going real fast with no brakes and no freewheels. After seeing Chris Dinsmore on the confirmed rider list at bikereg.com for the Novice Race I was really concerned that I would get spit out off the back in no time at all. It wouldnt matter though, I was mainly going to use this race as a warm up for the Cat 5 race that started shortly after. Things started with us lining up on the back wall to prepare for the neutral 1/2 lap start. I was nervous! We hit the start line and the pace picked up. Matt Tessitor from Fat Frogs Racing and a female rider took off and set the pace for the first 1/2 to 3/4 of a lap. I am not sure who that female was but she was FAST! The 10 laps made for some fast riding and a LOT of fun! When the bell rang for the last lap the pace picked up even more and one of the Frogs, Matt Keane, took off! We tried to stay on but he was moving too fast.... we came around to the final stretch and I am not entirely sure who or what other teams were in the top five, but there Frogs had some great finished. I finished fourth and I believe another Frog George Scheel finished third. This race was a BLAST! The pace was a lot more consistent than the Cat 5 races I am used to and the shorter time for the race kept the pace much faster and more interesting. I felt good in this race and . Now I can not wait for the Go Fast Turn Left series to get going!!

After a short break to switch numbers and keep warm it was time to start the real race of the day, the "Crash" 5 race. I was feeling GOOD, I was warmed up, my legs felt strong, and I still had the adrenaline pumping from the track race. I was ready to go! I had forgotten my heart rate monitor and my computer was taped over so I was going blind. Maybe this was a good thing becuase this group turned out to be SCARY! We rolled off of the start and went in to the first turn. This is where the fun started. I was sitting in the middle of the pack, riders on all sides of me in about 10th position. A few riders up was a team rate Ritchie in between two Casey riders. It appeared that one of the two Casey guys decided that Ritchie shouldn't be there and threw his shoulder in to him. This wasn't a little bump he was leaning in to him. I hoped that the whole race would not be like this. It got better, but as with all Crash 5 races the skill levels are all over the board. I may not be the best rider out there, but most of the time I can hold my line and for the most part a consistent pace. This group was EVERYWHERE, there was one team that I think were all converted triatheletes... they rode like they you see people ride on tri-bikes. Weaving all over! Dont get me wrong, they had some strong riders, but they just need some more group riding experience. The Fat Frogs team was truly working like a team. They were keeping up the pace and even allowed a short lived break away by one of the Frogs. Throughout the race I was determined to sit in the pack and not do any stupid stuff like I had in the past races. I was not going to shoot off the front and burn myself out in the early stages of the race.
The race went on and on, fast then slow, fast then slow, weaving around. At one point all I could do was just shake my head, it was pretty ridculous, riders were all over the place. Then finally after what seemed an eternity of laps I saw 4 laps to go. It was time to make some stuff happen. I started to work my up through the pack to about 5th or 6th position. It was even more frustrating because the faster pace of the race was bringing out even more squirrley-ness. I finally got to where I wanted to be and I was feeling "froggy". I wasn't where the other Frogs were, but I didn't see anyone in front of me and no one was trying to break away from the pack. The bell rang, it was time to see what I had left in my legs. I hit the first turn on the inside and the weaving started. I wasn't going to let that screw up my finish, I was still feeling strong. I started yelling that I was on the inside coming through hoping that the squirrels wouldnt run me off the road. As I came out of the turn there was a Tripower rider about 25 yards off the front. I hammered it down and caught his wheel and let him pull me towards the final turn. I looked over shoulder right before the turn and saw some blue jerseys awfully close. Images of a sprint to the finish in this group scared the hell out of me. I wasn't going to let them pass me! I threw down the little bit I had left through the turn and some how managed to break off and cross the finish in first!

The first place finish felt awesome, but somehow something does not feel quite "right" about it. Almost like I did not deserve the win. The other Frogs worked hard throughout the race, I sat in the middle of the pack holding my reserves. During the majority of the race I felt awesome. I wasn't breathing hard and had to fight hard to control the urge to jump up to the front, but I stayed where I was, comfortably riding in the pack and pacing myself. Then in the final laps the Frogs that were pushing so hard, the ones that deserved to be in the front for the finish, weren't there but I was. My win was not because I was strong, it was because I had an incredible team and I happened to be lucky enough to be in the right position going in to the final laps race. Possibly the feeling is me being relatively new and not being used to the way a team works in racing. Either way it's BAR points for the team!

All in all it was a pretty good weekend, a 16th, a 4th, and a 1st.  I have a little motivation to get going and train for the upcoming weekend of racing.  Tour De Beach on Saturday and the Casey Crit on Sunday.

Getting in some riding...

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Finally the weather has turned! The last couple of nice days have been warm or at least semi-warm and the roads have been for the most part dry. That meant that I finally got in a couple of days of riding after having 4 days off the bike. While riding with Dan Craft and talking about our riding strengths I realized something. I am not as nearly as motivated as he is. That is the single most reason why my performance has not improved as much or as fast as I would like it to, I'm not motivated enough. Velo-Fish put it pretty well in his post: "I am where I am at the moment due to a complete lack of vision on my part". I find it very hard to get motivated to do things I don't like and I do not push my self hard enough when riding by myself. I don't have that "vision". I enjoy riding, especially when it's nice out, like the last couple of days. I have had a blast at the last races this season. I just can not get the motivation to ride or train when it's not going to be something I enjoy. We just had 4 days of rain. Dan said he was getting up at 4 in the morning and riding a trainer before work then going out for a cold and wet ride after work. I value my sleep so getting out of bed before the ass-crack of dawn just isn't going to happen. I don't like riding in the cold and rain, I despise riding a trainers, and I hate Coach Troy even more. That translated to 4 days off of the bike.
This weekend will probably show me just how much all of this "hard core" training is working. I will be doing the Virginia Beach Farm Bureau Conquer the Canal Time Trial with a nice bright and early start time of 8:42 tomorrow morning. Then on Sunday I will be doing the novice track race and the Cat 5 Criterium at the Fat Frog's Langley Speedway Criterium. Three races in one weekend will make for a fun weekend!

FLAC to MP3 on a Mac...

I am trying to do as little as possible on a PC and as much as possible on the Mac. So as I learn a way to do something I am putting it here to make it easier to find when I need to remember how to do it again.
This time is was some flac music files that I wanted to convert to mp3. A quick search yielded this great how to:

Online registration for Go Fast Turn Left has opened up on bikereg.com.
Braden and gang have added a few new track events to the schedule. It sounds like it's going to be a blast. Maybe this time I can make it and race rather than blow money for registration and get stuck at home sick.
The first event is May 18th, second June 21, and the last is August 18th.
Here's the links to the online registration for the different events:

Wintergreen Ascent...

The Wintergreen TT is coming up in a just a few short weeks, May 3rd to be exact. I have been told that I have the build for climbing so I guess I will see if that is true. I can only be so good though seeing as a I don't have the advantage of having hills to train on. Maybe the constant winds we have in Pungo will count for something.
This course map shows just how much of a "fun" ride this one is going to be!
Online registration can be done at Bikereg.com or by clicking here.

I have been riding my mini-drops for a while now and cant say enough about them.  I wish I had heard about these a LONG time ago.

Now there is another person that has gone to the "mini" side... Live2ride has posted his glowing thanks to gamjams.net for the recommendation for the bars.

An update on my darling wife... Amber had her edometrial ablation yesterday and seems to be doing well. She slept the ENTIRE day yesterday thanks to Oxycodone and 800mg Ibuprofen. She took her last dose of Oxy last night before bed and slept through the night with minimal discomfort. This morning as I left for work she said she was feeling pretty good.
Tidewater Bike Racing Club has managed to pull it off. They have the Va Beach Crit Course at the Money Pit Stadium (aka Soccer Stadium) lined up for training crits on Tuesday nights!!! From what I can recall in emails that went bouncing around the first one will be on April 15th.
